User-Centred Green Web Engineering

On the next friday, 20th September, the correspending paper to the following post will be presented during the annual 43rd annual German conference on informatics (INFORMATIK2013) in Koblenz.
See here for more information about the workshop "Environmental Informatics between Sustainability and Change" (Umweltinformatik zwischen Nachhaltigkeit und Wandel, UINW).

Although the energy consumption caused by the Internet is increasing, the potentials of optimizing online multimedia content and websites in general are not jet focussed on. Indeed, there are different possibilities how web developers as well as user can improve the energy consumption of the Internet:

  • should be attentive to corresponding information: labels regarding the green web and equivalent information
  • should be sensitive by choosing and configuring tools (e.g. ad blockers, flash blockers, browser caches)
     Web developer
  • should optimise the source code of websites (CSS, HTML and JavaScript)
  • should compress photos and graphics before uploading them
You can read more about that topic in an older post "Green Web Engineering".

Hence editing of media content always influences its optical appearance, I conducted a online survey to find out about the user acceptance for the results of applying Green Web Engineering. The results show that user, especially those, who are interested in ecological topics, accept the impacts on multimedia content. Above that there are willing to take actions in the context of Green Web.

Overall it can be said, that a web engineering, adapted to users, organisations, and the environment, has the potential to support the energy and resource efficiency of the information and communication technologies. In that way, the environmentally hostile role of digital media within the field of sustainability informatics can be reduced, while the environmentally friendly role can be strengthened.

Besides the "User-Centred Green Web Engineering" we will talk about "Greening Software with Continuous Energy Efficiency Measurement" on friday.
